Top 10 things you must remember during the initial interview:
- Don’t forget that you are selling yourself……ask for the job. Your objective is to make the prospective employer feel like you are so unique and valuable, that you need to be hired.
- Understand what you are selling to the employer. Practice assertive behavior even if it does not come naturally.
- Remember that this is not a “two way street”, even if the interviewer implies that it is. Don’t be fooled into thinking that you are in a give and take situation. This is a “one way street”.
- Focus on what the interviewer needs in a candidate not in what you need out of a job. Like any other sale you need to point out specific advantages, benefits and features that are uniquely yours.
- Make sure that you are able to articulate or “bridge” your specific abilities to the employer’s needs. It sound like this: This is what I have done in the past …..and this is how these skills, talents ect… will benefit you.
- Practice what you want to communicate to the employer. If you don’t look people in the eye or communicate clearly you won’t get hired.
- Pay attention to your body language and dress the part. Be well dressed and meticulously groomed. Practice leaning forward in you chair, relaxing and giving eye contact.
- Research the company and the position before the interview. Make it your goal to know more about the company than the person that is interviewing you.
- Be keenly aware of your professional goals and where you would like to be in the future.
- Always speak kindly or at least be impartial about past employers- regardless as to how you really feel.
