Ask Tanya

I Was Fired from My Last Job . . .
Question:
I was fired from my last job. Do I have to put this on my résumé... ?

Tanya's Answer:
Basically, no. However, your résumé is just your ENTRY FORM into a job interview. Once on the interview, it is IMPERATIVE that you be upfront about your current situation. Be assured that people are fired for many different reasons, not always incompetence; and your particular situation may have nothing to do with your job performance. Even if it does, there may have been circumstances that contributed to your inferior performance on the job that could be explained.

Keep in mind though that your potential employer is sure to check your references and former employers. If your past employer even hints that you were "fired" and you didn't mention it on your interview, it will leave a bad taste in the new employer's mouth. It is better to be honest from the beginning and explain why you were let go....did you have personality conflicts with your former boss?...was the job interfering with your personal obligations at the time, i.e., sick parent or child?...whatever the circumstances, you should explain your side of the story without sounding like you are complaining about your former employer. If applicable, give examples of ways you have improved since then, or what steps you have taken to make sure that it doesn't happen to you again...have you completed any further education, or made arrangements for elderly parent care that will relieve you of personal obligations?
